   Abstract: Can we look to the Earth for hope and inspiration as we wrestle with the issues that face us in engineering moving forward into the 21st century? I think we can. The fundamental principles which guide the unfolding of the Earth are differentiation, subjectivity and communion. These principles can serve equally as markers for us in our efforts to redefine the role of engineering with respect to powerless, and the voiceless– those whose hopes and aspirations are far too easily ignored.
